Rationale:
The thyroid gland, in response to stimulation by TSH, produces 3,5,3',5'-tetratiodothyronine (T4). ), T3, and rT3. The synthesis of these hormones requires the amino acid tyrosine and the trace mineral iodine. All three thyroid hormones are important, but T4 is the most abundant of the three thyroid hormones, while T3 is the one most used by the body in its hormonal activities. T3 is converted from T4 in the peripheral circulation, primarily by the liver and the kidney. Thyroid hormones are produced by the thyroid gland when the Pituitary gland releases a stimulating hormone called Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH).
When we add the entire picture together we can see that we need a health Pituitary-Thyroid interaction, the building blocks needed to construct thyroid hormones (especially iodine and l-tyrosine), a healthy thyroid gland and healthy liver and (to a lesser extent) kidney function. Any failure in these areas will lead to impaired thyroid function.
